El Bueno El Malo Y El Feo. The Good Bad and Ugly-A Masterpiece of film

Part restoration and part archeology-SAD HILL CEMETARY-is an incredible accomplishment. It was left abandoned for almost 50 years. The original stones in the center circle  were unearthed and used where the extraordinary  last scene was filmed.
Sergio Leone’s team designed Sad Hill  and contracted with Francos army to build it. It was destroyed after the movie was produced.
When Eli Wallach passed 6 years ago it was the impetus to rebuild this historical site, locals and donations for a cross with your name on it were sources of income for this monumental task. ELG paid 20 Euros for his own wooden cross and grave.
James Hatfield the lead singer of the band Metallica donated a princely sum. Metallica starts all their shows with “The Ecstasy of Gold” ….along with a video of Tuco running through the graveyard.

This was my  pilgrimage to an incredible movie that shaped my life. And I wanted to be a part of it. The journey of getting there was almost as important as being there. It was planned six years ago.
There are no buses or trains to Santiago de Silos pueblo and the climb to SAD HILL is steep and challenging. The location is a document of time. A sacred experience. The final scenes in the cemetery are art work.

The name on the grave in case you are wondering ….was UNKNOWN next to the grave of Arch Stanton
